Networking Specialist Weekend Academy
Become part of the growing field of computer networking! Students will be able to complete all courses in two semesters (primarily in 7-week increments) on the weekend to achieve Networking Specialist Certificate. Courses include; IT Essentials, Introduction to Networking, Routing and Switching, Scaling and Networking, and Connection Networks.

The Networking Specialist Certificate is financial aid approved. Admittance into the program is by open admission. Students will be awarded a Massasoit Community College certificate verifying the successful mastery of program requirements. Students will then be eligible to sit for the Cisco CCNA certification exam to become certified in CCNA.  This program is part of the Telecommunications associate degree program. If a student wishes to persist upon receiving certificate they can become dual certified upon completion of degree requirements.

The Networking Specialist Certificate is designed for students who are interested in acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to work in the fields of IT and networking specialists and to pass the Cisco CCNA certification exam. Students will receive hands on competency-based instruction geared towards entry-level employment in the IT and networking industries. On completion of the program, students will have the skills required for IT and networking careers in industries including healthcare, financial services, fashion, and entertainment, and for continued credentialing in Cisco Networking Systems and/or degree programs such as IT, engineering, math, and science.

The Networking Specialist Certificate is financial aid approved. Admittance into the program is by open admission. Students will be awarded a Massasoit Community College certificate verifying the successful mastery of program requirements.

The Cisco CCNA Certification exam is the responsibility of the student.

Core Outcomes:
Students who complete the sixteen-credit Networking Specialist Certificate program will be able to perform the following competencies and skills defined by Cisco Networking Systems:

  • Use networking protocol models to explain the layers of communications in data networks
  • Design, calculate, and apply subnet masks and addresses
  • Build a simple Ethernet network using routers and switches
  • Employ basic cabling and network designs to connect devices
  • Use Cisco Cl commands to perform basic router and switch configuration and verification
  • Analyze the operations and features of the transport and network layer protocols and services
  • Configure and verify router interfaces
  • Demonstrate comprehensive RIPv1 configuration skills
  • Design and implement a classless IP addressing scheme for a network
  • Use advanced configuration commands with routers implementing EIGRP
  • Apply the basic RIPv2 classless routing updates
  • Identify the characteristics of distance vector routing protocols
  • Troubleshoot common network problems at Layers 1, 2, 3, and 7 using a layered model approach
  • Interpret network diagrams
  • Perform and verify initial switch configuration tasks including remote access management
  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot VLANs, interVLAN routing, VTP, trunking on Cisco switches and RSTP operation
  • Manage lOS configuration files
  • Identify the basic parameters to configure a wireless network and common implementation issues
  • Describe the impact of applications (Voice Over IP an Video Over IP) on a network
  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot DHCP and DNS operation on a router
  • Verify, monitor, and troubleshoot ACLs in a network environment
  • Configure and verify a basic WAN serial connection, a PPP connection between Cisco routers, and Frame Relay
  • Configure and verify PPP connection between Cisco routers, and Frame Relay Cisco routers
  • Troubleshoot WAN implementation issues

The Cisco® CCNA® Exploration curriculum is designed for Cisco Networking Academy® students who are seeking entry-level information and communication technology (ICT) skills. CCNA Exploration provides an integrated and comprehensive coverage of networking topics, from fundamentals to advanced applications and services, while providing opportunities for hands-on practical experience and soft-skills development.

CCNA Exploration is designed for students with advanced problem solving and analytical skills, such as students pursuing degrees in engineering, information technology, math, or science. Students are expected to know binary math and understand the concept of algorithms.

CCNA Exploration is composed of five courses:

TCOM129 - IT Essentials
This course covers the fundamentals of computer hardware and software and advanced concepts such as security, networking, and the responsibilities of an IT professional, and is equivalent to the A+ Certification.  

TCOM130 - Introduction to Networks
Introduces the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and computer networks. 

TCOM131 - Routing & Switching
Describes the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in a small network.  

TCOM132- Scaling Networks
Describes the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in a large and complex network.  

TCOM133 - Connecting Networks
Discusses the WAN technologies and network services required by converged applications in a complex network.
