Associate Degree Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The HVAC- Building Systems Energy Management program is a registered pre-apprenticeship program under The Division of Apprentice Standards. The program combines mechanical, electrical concepts with engineering design principles for use in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. Specific emphasis is placed on hands on refrigeration and HVAC concepts, as well as (CAD) computer aided drafting design and layout used in the HVAC industry. These skills will be applied in labs and classrooms as pertaining to the ever evolving HVAC industry. Through lecture and lab procedures, the program provides students with the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to enter this growing field. Graduating students will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Building Systems Energy Management.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES:

At the successful completion of the program curriculum, students will be able to:

  1. Manage building operations as applied to the HVAC field.
  2. Oversee outside contractors performing HVAC work.
  3. Install HVAC/R systems.
  4. Troubleshoot and repair HVAC/R systems.
  5. Write and understand cost estimates.
  6. Perform all heating and cooling load calculations.
  7. Design ducts to carry the proper airflow to conditioned areas.

Courses include:

Basic Electricity, Introduction to HVAC/R, Heat Principles and Application, Load Calculations and Duct Design, CAD, Refrigeration Principles and Applications, Hydronics and Piping Design, CNG Engines, Fundamentals of Standby Power, Service Procedures, Co-op Work Experience and HVAC Systems Control.

The Bureau of Pipefitters, Refrigeration Technicians, and Sprinklerfitters has accepted the updated curriculum to meet the requirements for application for the Refrigeration Technician’s license examination. The Bureau recognized that the MCC Refrigeration curriculum is only applicable to those students working either 4,000 hours or 6,000 hours as licensed Refrigeration Apprentices.to meet the requirements for application for the Refrigeration Technician’s license examination.

Students earn the following hours:

522 CMR 9.00: Refrigeration and Air conditioning Systems = 545 hours

527 CMR 12.00: Massachusetts Electrical Code (Amendments) = 250 hours

Students will also earn certificates in:

EPA – Universal Certification

R410A – Certification
