To be considered for Summer Financial Aid, you must:
The Federal Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor's or professional degree (or the equivalent from a foreign country). Amounts can change yearly, and are based on a student’s cost of attendance, enrollment status, and expected family contribution (EFC) from the FAFSA application.
You may be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant for the Summer Semester if you:
or
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG):
The FSEOG program is a campus-based program that provides awards for students with exceptional financial need. Priority consideration will be given to students who have an expected contribution of $0, are enrolled in at least six credits over the course of the Summer Semester, received a Federal Pell Grant during the 2017-2018 academic year, and who have submitted a complete Summer Financial Aid Application by May 29, 2018.
You may also be eligible to borrow a Federal Direct Subsidized and/or Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan if you enroll, and maintain enrollment in, at least six eligible credits over the course of all Summer sessions and you did not borrow your maximum annual loan amount during the prior academic year.
Additional information about the Federal Direct Loan program, including loan terms and annual/aggregate limits.
If you are not eligible for a Pell Grant, you will automatically be offered a student loan(s), if eligible. If you would like to accept the offered loans(s), you will need to complete a Summer Loan Acceptance Form for 2018 (PDF) and will need to confirm the amount that you would like to borrow.
If you did not previously borrow during the 2017-2018 academic year, you may also need to complete a Master Promissory Note and Loan Entrance Counseling at www.studentloans.gov.
Federal Work Study (FWS) is a federally-funded student employment program that provides part-time jobs for undergraduate students with financial need, allowing you to earn money to help pay educational expenses. Positions are available on both the Canton and Brockton campuses as well as at non-profit agencies in the community. The current rate of pay is $11.00/hr. on campus and up to $16.00/hr. off-campus. To apply for a Federal College Work Study position, please complete the Work Study Application (PDF) and return to the Financial Aid Office on the Brockton Campus or to the Enrollment Center on the Canton Campus.
You may be eligible to participate in the Summer Work Study Program even if you are not enrolled in any classes, as long as you intend to return to Massasoit in the Fall 2018 semester, as evidenced by Fall registration.
Your eligibility for federal financial aid programs is based on the number of credits that you are enrolled in, and are participating in, as of the financial aid census date. The census date for the Summer 2018 semester will be Thursday, May 31, 2018 for all students, regardless of which summer session(s) you attend.
Summer financial aid awards will be offered based on the course enrollment information that you provide on the Summer Financial Aid Application. If your actual enrollment on the census date differs from the enrollment status on which your summer financial aid award was originally based, it may be adjusted and/or cancelled.
If you drop, withdraw, or stop participating in a class on or before May 31,2018, it will NOT count in your enrollment status for financial aid purposes. You must be participating in class as of June 1 (and registered for Summer Session II classes) for the credits to qualify for financial aid.
Once you have been awarded Summer financial aid, classes added after the census date (such as Summer Session II classes) will not be included in your enrollment status when determining your eligibility for the Federal Pell Grant*, so it is very important that you register for all Summer Semester classes that you intend to take prior to the close of business on May 31, 2018.
* Exception: Students who are reviewed for Summer financial aid after the census date will have their Pell Grant eligibility based on their actual enrollment as of the date that Massasoit reviews their summer application and makes an initial calculation of their eligibility for the term.
If a student has dropped or stopped participating in a course prior to the review of their application, that class may not be included in their enrollment status for the term, even if the student participated in the class beyond the census date.
If you are a financial aid recipient and decide that you would like to drop a Summer class, or withdraw from the Summer Semester entirely, please see a Financial Aid Counselor BEFORE you act.
After your course participation has been confirmed, and award adjustments have been made (if necessary) , financial aid will be disbursed directly to your student accounts. We anticipate the first Summer disbursement will be made on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, and weekly thereafter.
Federal financial aid funds are disbursed on the basis of your enrollment status at the time of disbursement, on the presumption that you will attend the classes for which aid has been awarded, including Summer Session II classes, and late starting CTIM classes, that may not have begun at the time your funds are disbursed.
If you do not initiate attendance in Summer Session II classes that you were scheduled to attend, your Pell Grant eligibility will be recalculated, and you may be subject to a Return to Title IV Funds Calculation. This will result in a balance due for which you will be responsible.
For the Summer Semester only, Massasoit will invoke low cohort default rate exemptions and will disburse Summer loans in a single installment. Additionally, we will not delay the disbursement of a loan for 30 days for first-time, first-year undergraduate students.
If your financial aid award exceeds your charges, and you have completed all loan requirements (if applicable), you may use your anticipated credit balance to purchase books and supplies at the Massasoit Bookstore. If you are eligible to participate in this program, the Financial Aid Office will send an email to your Massasoit email address with additional information. The Summer Book Advance program will run from May 21 – June 8, 2018. We anticipate re-opening the program from July 2 – July 13, 2018 to accommodate students taking classes in Summer Session II.
